Neko-con

Nekocon was this weekend.

Not a bad anime con but the Embassy Suites that they have near the Coliseum just does not seem to be up to it.

Three elevators seem limited but not too bad. Wait times this year were not excessive.
Last year during the con they had a elevator breakdown, This year at least they did not have that problem but there were still some wait lines.
Not sure how many rooms they had set aside as reserved for the convention but as usual they never seem to have enough.
They also charge a lot for the room, then charge for the internet connection.

I traveled over quite a bit of TX in October and stayed in several Hilton owned hotels. All month none of them charged for internet. Yet here was a hotel doing so. $229 PER NIGHT for a 'suite' sitting room in the front, bathroom  and a bedroom in the back. and $9.99 for 24 hours connection. 34k up/ less than a meg down.

It is just enough that I may be turning my back on Neko-con. Kinda depends on my daughter as walking around the cons buying things for her is my chief task. Taking photos like these are just my hobby :-)

I guess we will have to see what Katsu-con (feburary), Animazement (May) Otakon (July-Aug) bring. Published by Whyy's Rambling on November 9th, 2009 Tagged Contributors, life anime | Comment now »

NaNoWriMo

Well NaNoWriMo has started.

Ideas kinda bubbling but nothing really fit the plot I had in mind.
Stopping every few minutest to write down a plot bunny is .... different.

eBook readers

Most of the PDA and handhelds that I have bought over the years have been purchased for two reasons.

Writing and reading. Due to the fact that I can read and do some other tasks at the same time they were mostly used for reading.

Some were better and some were worse but the biggest issue was that each would only read a few types of things well.

Doc, rtf. or html and MS Lit or Palm and converted Doc. It was always a hastle to juggle the form I get a story or eBook in to what the reader used.

Then comes the Amazon Kindle. Still limited in formats but you can buy the books right on-line. Then all the flap about the fact that hey they can "recall" the book.

Sony's eReader looked good for a bit. Still limited to formats and for the price no on-line store.

Then while looking for a PC for my niece at FRYS.com I found this odd little 5 inch reader.
ECTACO JetBook (5" Display, Mulit-Language, 7.5oz) e-Book Reader - Graphite
.txt, .pdf, .fb2 and .jpg file formats SD card slot  At first I laughed but I kept reading.
It was loaded with multiple languages, the CIA WorldFact book and a travel guide.

As I worked my way through the page it pointed me to another reader.

Supports multiple file formats (DOC, PDF, JPG, MP3, TXT, HTML, and many more)
Expansion SD card slot to expand storage capacity by 4 GB

Now this seemed more like it, so I kept reading.
<td style="PADDING-BOTTOM: 3pt; PADDING-LEFT: 3pt; WIDTH: 113.25pt; PADDING-RIGHT: 3pt; BACKGROUND: rgb(255,255,153); PADDING-TOP: 3pt; -moz-background-clip: -moz-initial; -moz-background-origin: -moz-initial; -moz-background-inline-policy: -moz-initial" width="151" valign="top">

Format Natively Support (Non DRM)

</td><td style="PADDING-BOTTOM: 3pt; PADDING-LEFT: 3pt; WIDTH: 297pt; PADDING-RIGHT: 3pt; PADDING-TOP: 3pt" width="396" valign="top">

PDF, DOC, RTF, HTML, TXT,  MP3, WOL, CHM, RAR/ZIP, FB2, Djvu, Epub, BMP, JPG, LIT, PRC

Looking at it agaim  Adobe PDF, doc/txt/rtf, windows help (chm), RAR/zip, the new EPUB eBook format, LIT and PRC we are talking about almost every eBook type out there.

Replaceable (by the owner) battery, SD card expansion.<td style="PADDING-BOTTOM: 3pt; PADDING-LEFT: 3pt; WIDTH: 113.25pt; PADDING-RIGHT: 3pt; BACKGROUND: rgb(255,255,153); PADDING-TOP: 3pt; -moz-background-clip: -moz-initial; -moz-background-origin: -moz-initial; -moz-background-inline-policy: -moz-initial" width="151" valign="top">

ePaper (E-Ink technology)  6 Inches 600*800 pixel 4 grayscale

Offered at Frys for $299

So I went looking and found
http://www.astak.com/category.asp?id=8

this lead to http://theezreader.com/

An eBook reader that does almost every ebook format with a 16GB SD card reader and a user replaceable battery. For $199 til Sep 30th.

I got mine last week. So far only a couple of the ebooks from the Usenet have caused any issues.
seems really well constructed

CoH/V Aion EVE Online Champions

Well on July 12th I got my City of Heroes 54 month Veterans Reward.

Yep 4.5 years.

On July 16th I finally got my first character to the cap 50th level.

This opened up the Kheldians Arch-Type for me. True I could have power leveled and gotten here a lot earlier but I just never could get behind that. Besides, by doing most of it solo there is a sense of accomplishment.

There are problems with soloing though. I had started a SuperGroup with three others. One dropped almost immediately when he got married and no time to play. The second played quite a bit and leveled to 50 almost 3 years ago. The Third played more than I did but less than the other. She got 50 and was playing with her husband on another server more.

Playing the game is fun but just not as interesting as it once was. Right now I am enjoying the Beta of Aion. How the real full time game will play out, I am not sure. I have never been much for PvP and it is a big part of the higher levels with Aion. In CoH there are multiple contacts and many different enemies even if it gets a bit repetitive. Different types (Tank, scrapper, defender. etc) get different missions. Different origins, (Natural, Science, Magic) seem to get different enemies and therefore different missions and rewards.
Aion is pretty linear. Lots of different tasks but after you run a mage through, going back to the beginning and running a warrior or ranger through has very little different so I am unsure how this will play out.

I have also been looking at EVE Online.
It reminds me quite a bit of Elite a game I played for hours on the Commodore 64.

After looking on line for Elite, I found this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elite_(computer_game)
In interviews, the senior producers of CCP Games have cited Elite as one of the inspirations for their acclaimed Eve Online MMORPG. Thorolfur Beck in particular said that Elite was the game that impacted him most on the Commodore 64, and that it was the prime motivator behind Eve Online.

Eve appears to have mostly PvP but that can be pretty much avoided if you want to stick to the "safe" worlds. Kinda like what you would really expect out there.

So the question is $15 a month for Eve or for Aion? Do I keep CoH or am I done with it? and how different will the Champions MMO be? Published by Whyy's Rambling on July 22nd, 2009 Tagged Contributors, life, mmo, sharing | Comment now »

Aion NCsoft response.

The point of the Arena quest is to introduce you to the arenas and it is also an area that is VOLUNTARY. You are able to scout out this area well before entering it as you can see the players in the area. Its an open non-instanced area that ANYONE can enter for any reason. What happens to you there is subject to you and everyone else there.

Regards,
GM Akahige

This is the response to the previous question.
A quest is given to find the owner of a ribbon.
The contact is in a PvP Arena.

During the closed Beta with the cap on levels there were 3-4 players that just set in the Arena. These players were level 20 already.
The quest is given at level 10. So you go to the Arena and then enter. Within seconds the 20s hit you twice and you are back outside the arena.

Going back in, gets you a repeat. The Ranger has a skill called Hide. At level 10 it is the first level of hide and you can walk past PvE with very little chance of discovery. Fighting a 20 you are NOT hidden. Two shots and you are back outside.

8 level 10s and 12s could not take down 1 level 20 before most of the 10s and 12s were kicked out of the Arena.

If we were just going in to play/fight in the arena that would be one thing but most of us were trying to just finish the quest.
You could sometimes make it to the contact but clicking on the contact and making it through the story to complete the quest was almost impossible.
Nearly as impossible as a 10 taking out a 20.

For three 20 level characters to sit in a PvP arena and take out level 10s-12s for no reason does not make sense to me.
There were no rewards other than to say you took out a lower level character.

As you can see their response is "Hey too bad."

=================================
Apparently you do not get my point.

Ganking
It is a word commonly used in online video games, usually used in an MMORPG. Ganking is the process in which a group of charecters gang up on one or more players that do not have a chance to defend themselves, Or when one high level player does the same action to a player way below his or her own level.
Ganking is typically considered very uncool because it usually involves skanky tactics to lay the beatdown on an enemy.
To be killed without mercy on a MMORPG for the sport of it.

This casts the game Aion in a bad light and will turn OFF new players. Do you want the game to be successful or to go the way of Tabula Rasa?

So as a SUGGESTION move the quest OUT of the arena and allow people to play in it as they wish. Having a QUEST is NOT voluntary. Most people like to complete ALL of their tasks.
